Two San Diego Unified School District Board of Education trustees planned to propose a partnership with the YMCA or another organization on Tuesday to maintain and operate yet-to-be-constructed swimming pools.
San Diego Unified's one pool at La Jolla High School was built with private funds, and additional aquatic facilities were included in the $2.8 billion bond approved by voters in November, according to trustees Scott Barnett and Marne Foster.
City pools' hours have been reduced over the years, and both students and residents need them, they said. However, pool operations and maintenance requires ongoing funds.
Barnett and Foster planned to ask the board to direct staffers to implement, develop or expand existing agreements, or issue a request for proposals with the YMCA and/or other interested organizations for the construction, operations and maintenance of up to 10 pools.
YMCA and district leaders had already identified 10 sites, according to Barnett and Foster, who added the partnership would be a win-win for taxpayers, communities and students.
Also scheduled for tonight's meeting is a presentation on how Gov. Jerry Brown's May state budget revisions could affect San Diego Unified's finances in the upcoming fiscal year.
Included in the governor's revised budget proposal was the local control funding formula, which aims to give districts oversight of how money is spent, and would increase funding for English learners, students from low- income families and those in foster care.
The May revisions also project extra revenue from Proposition 30 tax increases, although slow growth is expected next year. The district expects to receive $18 million to spend over two years to spend implementing common core state standards.
The district is scheduled to adopt its budget for 2013-14 on June 25.
