La Jolla High School Graduates the 'Lucky' Class of '13

A total of 354 seniors graduated from La Jolla High School on Tuesday afternoon.

Some find the number 13 to be unlucky, but La Jolla High School graduating senior Marian Dorst said the number signifies completion, power and change. The Class of 2013 has completed their high school studies and certainly succeeded at making a name for itself as a powerhouse in academics and athletics; now it is time for the change.

"As you embark on the next stage of your life, remember those who have helped you get to where you are today," Principal Dana Shelburne said, invited students to stay connected to their alma mater.

He also shared a William Jennings Bryan quote, "Destiny is not a matter of change; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.”

"You have the talent, you have the skills, you have prepared for the journey, not a destination. Be focused, stay focused and continue to learn," he added.

In addition to wishing 354 students luck in life after graduation, La Jolla High School also said goodbye to three retiring staff members. Beth Behnke, director of guidance, history teacher Judith Hubbard, and history teacher and coach David Ponsford are retiring this year.

Student speakers at the commencement were Criselia Chavez, Karly Zlatic, Marian Dorst, Harry Wilson and Kathryn Andrews (in order of appearance).
