Panera Bread Closes Doors in La Jolla

Panera Bread closed in La Jolla on Sept. 15 after not being able to reach an agreement with the property landlord.

With all the construction on the new luxury shops at the corner of Girard Avenue and Wall Street in La Jolla, you may have missed that Panera Bread closed.

The casual eatery opened in La Jolla in June 2011 and closed its doors on Sept. 15.

A sign on the door states that "upon mutual agreement" with property landlord—Davlyn Investment—Panera "will permanently vacate the space."

"Panera Bread has been blessed to serve the community of La Jolla for the past 2 years and we look forward to doing so in the future." said Sandy McElfresh, director of Sales and Marketing for Panera, in a statement posted on the doors. "However Davlyn Investment has made a request of Panera Bread to release some space back to them for necessary building improvements."

The statement goes on to state that "it was clear the best option was for Panera Bread to relocate." It is currently looking in both the village and the UTC area, it said.

The page-long note also added that La Jolla Panera employees were given an opportunity to transfer to a nearby store location.
