Hometown: Pomona, CA Birthday: July 21 Bio: A southern California native, I grew up in the Inland Valley and moved to the San Gabriel Valley after graduating from Pomona College in 2003. I began my writing career by contributing satirical pieces to various online publications before enrolling at the USC Annenberg School for Journalism in 2005. In 2006, I spent a summer working as a reporter at the Cape Times in Cape Town, South Africa. I graduated from the USC Annenberg School in 2007 with an M.A. in journalism and worked for the Los Angeles Times and NFL Network before signing on as a staff writer at the Pasadena Star-News in 2008. I left the Star-News in 2010 to become the editor of Monrovia Patch. In my spare time, I try to repress my obsession with sports, particularly baseball and football. I'm a lifelong Dodger fan but I couldn't be more disgusted with the team and its truly embarrassing ownership situation. And yet I can't stop watching games and shouting at the television. Beliefs: At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know. Politics How would you describe your political beliefs? I'm a firm believer that political labels are divisive and have lost any substantive meaning but if I had to describe my beliefs along a spectrum, I'd say they lean toward the left side. I try my best to approach subjects objectively and resist the temptation to seek out only the information that serves to reinforce my beliefs. Are you registered with a certain party? I registered as a Democrat a long time ago, but I have never and will never vote simply along party lines. Religion How religious would you consider yourself? (casual, observant, devout, non religious) My father grew up Baptist and my mother Lutheran, but I'm very grateful that they let me develop my own beliefs. I'm not religious, but I am certainly curious to know more about how we all came to be and what happens next. Local Hot-Button Issues What do you think are the most important issues facing the community? The city continues to position itself as a pro-business community so the issues that surround development are naturally a big deal in Monrovia. Gang violence will remain a serious subject as the city continues to implement its gang injunction. Where do you stand on each of these issues? Not everything that can be built should be, and time will tell if the city's small town atmosphere gets lost as more national retailers move in. I hope it isn't.
