5 Things to Do This Week in La Jolla: Storytime and Quest to Live and Work on the Ocean Floor

Here are five things residents of La Jolla need to know for the week of Sept. 30.

1. Art historian Linda Blair will speak about renowned artists Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cézanne at the Athenaeum at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1. Read more here.

2. Learn "Five Things Everyone Should Know About the Syrian Civil War" on Wednesday at UC San Diego at 5 p.m. in the Robinson Building Complex. Five eminent civil war experts will help you understand what is happening in Syria today. The moderator is Barbara Walter, Professor of Political Science, and speakers are Eli Berman, professor of Economics Jesse Driscoll, assistant professor of Political Science Stephan Haggard, Lawrence and Sallye Krause professor of Korea-Pacific Studies Miles Kahler, Rohr Professor of Pacific International Relations.

3. Attend Children's Storytime at the Athenaeum on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The music and arts library on Wall Street and Girard Avenue hosts Children's Storytime each and every Wednesday at 3 p.m.

4. Birch Aquarium will host an author presentation and book signing with Ben Hellwarth, author of SEALAB: America's Forgotten Quest to Live and Work on the Ocean Floor, on Monday, Sept. 30. In the early 1960s, the U.S. Navy launched a series of experiments to prove that divers could live and work from a base on the seafloor. In SEALAB, author Ben Hellwarth discusses these underwater habitats, one of which was set up just off our shore with the help of Scripps scientists. Buy the book in advance from the Aquarium Gift Shop and receive priority seating at the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and free for members.

5. New York Times bestselling author and founder of In Touch Ministries, Charles F. Stanley will be at Warwick's on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. to sign his book Emotions. This is a ticketed signing only. A complimentary ticket, admitting 2 adults will be given with the purchase of Emotions from Warwick's. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed.
