Several hundred people, the majority of them surfboard in tow, gathered at La Jolla Shores on Sunday morning to show solidarity in the fight against cancer.
Surfers, cancer survivors, and other members of the community joined together at La Jolla Shores on Sunday morning for the fifth annual Survivor Beach. In addition to listening to speakers, and watching a Polynesian dance performance, attendees achieved their goal of breaking the previously set record for the longest continuous line of surfboards. The new record of 1,674 feet eclipsed the one set at last year’s event by just less than 250 feet. Event organizers joked that next year they will have to “find a new beach.”
Survivor Beach is a precursor to the Luau and Longboard Invitational, a surf competition, which is slated for August 21. The goal of both events is to raise awareness and funds for research, patient care, and for outreach and educational programs at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
