Family Rescued At Sea Defends Decision to Take Baby on Around-the-World Odyessy

Trending: A family with ties to the San Diego area was rescued at sea after their 1-year-old daughter became ill and their 36-foot sail boat encountered problems.

SAN DIEGO – A family rescued at sea by the U.S. Navy after their sailboat became stranded is defending their decision to embark on an around-the-world journey with two small children, NBC reported.

Eric and Charlotte Kaufman began the trip two weeks ago with their daughters, 1-year-old Lyra and 3-year-old Cora. Lyra became ill Thursday, suffering from a rash and a fever and the 36-foot sail boat lost communications and steering, NBC reported.

Some members of the Kaufman's own family criticized the decision to take the trip.

"We are proud of our choices and our preparation, and while we are disappointed that we lost our sailboat and our home, we remain grateful for those who came to our aid and those family and friends who continue to encourage and support us," Eric and Charlotte wrote in a statement, NBC reported.
