'Some Like It Hot' at the Athenaeum

The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla will kick off its summer film festival "Flicks on the Bricks" on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The kicks off its classic film fest on Thursday with blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe and champagne. The Music & Arts Library’s Flicks on the Bricks first showing is Some Like It Hot on Thursday evening. The classic film festival is a summertime treat in La Jolla.

This year the Athenaeum partnered with La Jolla-based to offer a pre-film meal. Make a night of it. Head to Finch’s for a prix fixe movie-themed meal on its outdoor patio and then stroll over to the Athenaeum for an outdoor film. Each meal is three courses and includes a glass of wine.

Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and costs $35 per person. Reservations are strongly suggested.

If you want to do dinner at home, then head straight to the Music & Arts Library. It will be serving up snacks and wine on the patio under the stars. Wine expert Barbara Baxter will introduce the wines paired with each film.

Tickets for the films are $17 for members and $22 for nonmembers. Tickets for the series are $60 for members and $80 for nonmembers.

Aug. 2: Some Like It Hot

Menu – Chilled cucumber and avocado soup, braised chicken or La Jolla Salad with grilled shrimp and hearts of palm, and champagne cherry sorbet with marinated berry garnish.

Aug. 9: Under the Tuscan Sun

Menu – Tuscan white beach butternut soup, Pomodoro Toscana or farfalle with scrimp or chicken, and ricotta cheesecake squares with kumquat orange marmalade for dessert.

Aug. 16: Murder on the Orient Express

Menu – Tomato beet gazpacho, lemon rosemary chicken skewers with garlic herb yogurt dip, ratatouille and crispy potatoes or flatiron salad, and fallen chocolate cake with Chantilly cream.

Aug. 23: Sabrina

Menu – Vichyssoise soup, red snapper en papillote or la mer salad with salmon, and profiterole with black cherry ice cream and warm chocolate sauce.
