Luau and Longboard Invitational To Take Over La Jolla Shores

The Luau and Longboard Invitational is a fundraiser for cancer research and care at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

UC San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center is fighting cancer in the laboratories and on the beach. The university’s Luau and Longboard Invitational will be Sunday near Scripps Pier.

The annual fundraiser includes a surf competition, luau, lunch and silent auction – all to raise money for fund cancer research. Since founded nearly 20 years ago, the fundraiser has raised more than $5 million to fund cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

In addition, Moores Cancer Center awards one top honor each year. This year the Rell Sunn award will be awarded to Nobel laureate and UC San Diego professor Roger Tsien.

UCSD explained that the award was established in 1998 to honor the memory of Rell Sunn, the “Queen of Makaha.” It said this trophy is awarded each year to the person who best display the qualities shared by Rell and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational – the battle against cancer combined with unselfishness, compassion and a true aloha spirit.

Tsien is a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He developed a way to image and possibly event deliver specially targeted drug to cancer tumors.

“The Luau and Longboard Invitational is an exceptional event which illustrates, year after year, the incredible support from the local community and businesses for our research,” said Scott Lippman, MD and director of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center in a statement. “Generous donations to the event support our mission to translate promising scientific discoveries into new and better options for the care of our patients. With each day, we move one step closer to finding cures of cancer.”

The surfing competition is free to watch. Tickets to the fundraiser are $150. To purchase tickets call 858-246-1230 or visit longboardluau.org.

The Longboard Invitational starts at 7 a.m. near Scripps Pier. Company-sponsored teams of four will be paired up with a longboard surf legend to compete in the surfing contest.

The Luau starts at 11:30 a.m. and features lunch, live music, dancers and a silent auction.
