Vikings Fall 27-7 to Sundevils in Season Opener

La Jolla gets within a touchdown in the third quarter before Mt. Carmel pulls away down the stretch.

Host Mt. Carmel High scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away from La Jolla High for a 27-7 victory in Friday's season opener for both schools.

Sundevil quarterback Nick Vasko had scoring runs of 11 and 8 yayds in the first half to give Mt. Carmel a 13-0 lead at the break.

Junior running back Kenneth Martey ran it in from 11 yards out for to bring the Vikings within 13-7, but two scoring runs of 9 and 22 yards in the fourth quarter clinched the win for the Sundevils.

Mark Pollan (54 yards on 11 carries) and Chance Abbott (51 yards on four carries) led the Vikings' ground game, with Martey adding 24 yards on five carries.

La Jolla quarterback Bobby Schuman completed 5 of 18 passes for 41 yards, with Billy Penny making three of the catches, good for 31 yards.

Mt. Carmel rushed for 318 yards, just over twice as much as the Vikings, who had 158 yards on the ground. Mt. Carmel had just three completions for 32 yards.

On defense, junior defensive back Jack Irwin had an interceptioin for the Vikings, and William Geary and Manuel Torres-Garcia recovered Sundevil fumbles.
