U.S. Open Coming to Torrey Pines in 2021
The 2008 U.S. Open, the first at the seaside golf course, became one of the most memorable in the history of the tournament when Tiger Woods went into a playoff to hold off a challenge from Rocco Mediate.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer today applauded the golf association's selection of Torrey Pines Golf Course for the U.S. Open in 2021.
"The U.S. Open presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase San Diego to the world," Faulconer said. "Thanks to collaboration between the (U.S. Golf Association) and the city of San Diego, as well as City Council President Todd Gloria's leadership earlier this year, we were able to secure this world- class sporting event."
He said the selection means Torrey Pines will once again become "an instant tourist destination for visitors from around the globe" between now and 2021, and serve "as a major boon to our local economy."
