University City Junior All-Stars Still in the Hunt

UC, 3-1 in the South Sub-Division tourney, needs to beat San Clemente twice in Riverside to advance to the SoCal championship series.

The University City Little League Juniors All-Star team is one of four teams still fighting for the Southern California championship and will need to beat San Clemente twice over the next two days in Riverside to advance to this weekend's best-of-three title series.

UC can rightfully claim the title of best Junior League team in San Diego County after twice defeating Luckie Waller (Chula Vista) Little League, the only other San Diego team in the South Sub-Division playoffs.

Brad Gafford pitched UC to a 7-0 win over Luckie Waller on Saturday, but the team lost to West Corona 11-4 on Sunday. UC rebounded by eliminating Luckie Waller in a 6-5 comeback victory on Monday and avenged the loss to West Corona with a 3-1 win over that squad on Tuesday.

The playoffs for the 13- and 14-year-olds are at the SoCal Sub-Division stage, with the winner of the South tourney facing the North winner (Encino) in this weekend's best-of-three series, also in Riverside. That winner advances to the Junior League Western Regional Aug. 2-9 in Aliso Viejo. The champion there heads to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, MI, from Aug. 14-20.

Since San Clemente is unbeaten in the double-elimination South tournament, University City needs to win Wednesday night at 7 and again on Thursday. The  tourney is being held at the Arlington Heights Sports Complex in Riverside, at 9401 Cleveland Ave.
