UCSD's Fogarty Honored After Double Win in Sprints

The Triton track star takes the 100 and 200 at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge, where UCSD claims both the women's and men's team titles.

UC San Diego senior sprinter Kelly Fogarty has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 6.

Fogarty had a big day at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, leading the Triton women to a team victory over eight other schools from the San Diego area. She won both the 100 and 200 meters and picked up NCAA qualifying times in both events.

Fogarty's time of 11.83 in the 100 was good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifier, while her time of 23.79 in the longer event earned her an automatic qualifier. She set a school record in the 200, breaking her own mark of 23.96 from the prelims at the NCAA Championships last season in Charlotte, N.C.

The Danville (CA) native is the second consecutive Triton to earn the CCAA's weekly honor after senior Danielle Thu won the award last week following an impressive performance at the 15th Annual Rossi Relays.

The Triton women won 10 events and totaled 206 points to finish ahead of eight other schools from the San Diego area and beyond. San Diego State finished in second place with 138 points, while Point Loma was third with 103 and Cal State San Marcos fourth with 75.

UCSD posted victories in six events on the men’s side and tallied 197.5 points to beat out seven other squads. Cuyamaca finished second with 109 points, Southwestern College took third with 105 and Point Loma was fourth at 100.5.

The Tritons have been dominant against the other programs in San Diego recently, winning both the men’s and women’s competitions at the City Championships each of the last three years before sweeping the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on Saturday.

Senior Stephanie LeFever joined Fogarty in winning multiple events on the day, placing first in the 100-meter hurdles (14.18), high jump (5'7.25") and long jump (18'10.5"), while also contributing to a Triton victory in the 4x100 relay. She picked up an NCAA provisional qualifier with her performance in the 100 hurdles.

Three other Tritons recorded provisional qualifiers: Caitlin Meagher, Danielle Thu and Uchenna Agbahiwe. Meagher posted a provisional mark with a winning time of 1:02.74 in the 400-meter hurdles, while Thu and Agbahiwe both earned qualifiers in the discus. Thu finished second in the event with a toss of 146'1", while Agbahiwe was third at 142'. SDSU's Jeanette McConnell won with a mark of 155'6".

In addition to her performance in the discus, Thu won the hammer throw with a toss of 173'8". She was competing with a heavy training hammer and fell way short of her usual marks, but still managed to outdistance the rest of the field. Fellow thrower Theresa Richards was UCSD's other individual event winner, claiming the javelin for the second week in a row with a toss of 128'8".

The Triton throwers were outstanding on the men's side as well, posting victories in three of the four events. Sophomore Ryan Eckert won the shot put at 48'8.75", while Zachary Nagengast placed first in the discus at 149'9" and Ab Shaheen took the hammer at 180'1".

Junior sprinter Roger Huang won the 800 with a time of 1:58.55, while junior transfer KaWai Ng posted a victory in the men's triple jump with a mark of 46'8".

UCSD swept the 4x400 relays on the day, with the women posting a time of 3:53.27 and the men clocking in at 3:26.00.

The Tritons now head to UC Irvine for the All-Cal Championships on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. UCSD’s distance squads will participate in the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday.

Cal Poly Pomona's Reyana Colson scored a game-high 26 points and Megan Ford finished with 20 to lead the second-seeded Broncos to a 78-75 come-from-behind victory over the third-seeded Tritons Friday in the semifinals of the 2011 California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament at Cal State East Bay.

UCSD held a 13-point lead with 12 1/2 minutes left to play, but Pomona answered with a crushing 30-12 run over the next 10 minutes to take control and end the Tritons' hopes for a first CCAA tournament title. UCSD fell to Pomona for the second time in eight days and dropped to 0-3 against the Broncos this season.

UCSD fell to 20-11 overall, losing in the conference tournament semifinals for the second year in row. The Tritons' season is likely over as they were on the outside of the NCAA West Regional playoff picture looking in at No. 9 entering tournament play.

“We played really hard tonight and controlled the game for a while,” coach Charity Elliott said. “We just didn't get the stops we needed to and we gave them too many extra possessions and that really hurt us. I'm really proud of our heart and effort, we just didn't get it done.”

Lauren Freidenberg had 19 points and eight rebounds for UCSD, while Chelsea Carlisle tallied 17 points and five assists. Megan Perry and Daisy Feder scored 10 points apiece.

The Tritons are now 4-4 in all-time in CCAA tournament play, failing to reach the conference title game for the third year in a row. UCSD advanced to the finals in 2007-08, but came up short against Chico State, 69-63.

The Broncos defeated the Tritons 60-51 on Feb. 24 in Pomona during the final weekend of the regular season.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego second baseman Blake Tagmyer has been named the Wilson/CCAA Player of the Week after hitting .500 over a four-game series against San Francisco State.

Tagmyer helped the third-ranked Tritons to a 3-1 record in the series. He went 6-for-12 with five runs scored, a double, a home run and six RBI. He led UCSD in runs batted in and walks.

In the opening game of the series, Tagmyer had  to a two-run single in the first spark the Tritons to a 7-1 victory. The Centennial, CO, native blasted his second home run of the season in the first inning of game four, a two-run job to right field.

It's the fourth week in a row that UCSD has produced either a CCAA player or pitcher of the week.

A 10-run eighth inning carried the Tritons to a 13-3 victory over San Francisco State Sunday in CCAA action at Triton Ballpark and a 3-1 series win.

UCSD (15-5, 8-4 CCAA) had eight hits in the big inning. Centerfielder Danny Susdorf and leftfielder Aaron Bauman led off with back-to-back doubles. Pinch hitter Nick La Face had a three-run double in the inning, picking up the first runs batted in of his career.

Susdorf had a memorable day, tying career-highs with four hits and three runs. Tagmyer went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. He hit his second home run of his season, a two-run job to right in the first inning.

Freshman shortstop Garrett Tuck singled in the second inning to improve his team-best hit streak to 10 games. UCSD had season-high 15 hits in the game and totaled 47 over the four-game series.

On Saturday, Guido Knudson threw seven strong innings and Evan Kehoe pounded out four hits as the Tritons topped San Francisco State, 10-2, in the opening game of a CCAA doubleheader at Triton Ballpark. The Gators rebounded to take the second game, 5-3.

Knudson (3-1) pitched seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven while walking one. The senior right-hander retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Ten different Tritons had hits in the game. Kehoe was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and out-scored SFSU himself with three runs. The third baseman led off the second and third innings with a base hit and had singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

Centerfielder Kyle Saul went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI and stole his ninth base of the season.

Up next for UCSD is a four-game set against CCAA opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills. Single games will be played in Carson on Thursday and Friday, and Triton Ballpark will host a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Kris Lesovsky of the No. 10-ranked UC San Diego softball team has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 6.

Lesovsky, a senior from Simi Valley, led the Tritons to a 5-1 record last week, including a pair of wins over Cal State San Bernardino and a 3-1 series victory over Humboldt State. In six games she batted .500 (7-for-14) with seven runs scored, two doubles, a pair of home runs, six RBIs and 10 walks.

For the week, Lesovsky posted a 1.071 slugging percentage and .680 on-base percentage to help the Tritons take over first place in the CCAA.

The Tritons combined for 24 runs in a pair of wins over Humboldt State in CCAA play Saturday afternoon, beating the Lumberjacks 12-2 and 12-8 at Triton Softball Field to improve to 19-3 overall and 13-2 in CCAA play.

Camille Gaito (12-0) earned the victories in both contests, working the minimum five innings in game one and the final 1.2 innings of game two. Nicole Spangler racked up three runs and three RBI in a 4-for-6 afternoon while accounting for the game-winning RBI in game two. The 24 runs on Saturday matches the same number of runners left on base by the Tritons in their Friday doubleheader with the 'Jacks in which they split, winning 6-2 and losing 9-4.

UCSD notched a season-high six hits in the third inning in the opening game Saturday. Gaito pitched her 10th complete game while striking out three and surrendering five hits.

Her third complete game this week gives Gaito 42 complete games in her career, moving her into fourth place in school history. Her 42 career victories are also fourth-best in UCSD annals.

Since recording an RBI triple in the seventh inning of a 3-0 win on Feb. 23 at the University of San Diego, Nicole Spangler is hitting .529 (9-for-17) as the Tritons’ everyday designated player. She was 7-for-11 versus Humboldt State and came up big with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning of the final, pounding a  line drive off the glove of HSU pitcher  Jessica George to score two and break an 8-8 tie.

Mya Romero was 2-for-3 with four RBI hitting in the ninth position for the first time in 2011, driving in a pair of runs with a double and single.  Lesovsky’s three runs on Saturday gave her 106 for her Triton career, fourth-most in school history. Patty Hurtt (1985-88) and T.J. Bronson (1984-87) scored 105 times in their UCSD careers.

The Tritons take their show on the road for the next five weeks, traveling to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus before returning to Triton Softball Field against Sonoma State on April 15-16. Sandwiched in between UCSD’s busy CCAA schedule is April 1-3’s Tournament of Champions in Turlock.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men’s volleyball team couldn’t repeat its earlier upset over No. 3 Stanford and fell 3-1 to the Cardinal before a record crowd of 1,012 at RIMAC Arena Saturday night.

Scores went 25-22, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-17. UCSD fell to 6-14 overall and 3-11 in MPSF matches, while Stanford upped its marks to 14-4 and 11-4. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Cardinal.

Outside hitter Carl Eberts led the Tritons with 15 kills and a .429 attack percentage. Outside Joel Davidson added 11 kills and opposite Shane Veiga had 10. Chase Frishman had a match-high 14 digs.

The teams split the season series. UCSD pulled a huge 3-0 upset at Stanford on Feb. 11, snapping the Cardinal's 18-match home win streak. It was the first time ever the Tritons had won at Maples Pavilion.

The crowd of more than 1,000 was the most ever for a UCSD men's volleyball match at RIMAC. The previous high was 906 against UCLA in 2009.

On Friday the Tritons lost in straight sets against No. 15 Pacific at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-19, 31-29 and 25-19. The Tigers swept the season series, winning 3-1 in early February in Stockton.

The Tritons go on the road this week to play at No. 1 USC on Friday and at No. 9 Pepperdine on Saturday.

A week earlier the Tritons men's golf team took sixth place out of 11 teams competing in the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational, carding a 299 in the final round at the Seven Oaks Country Club.

Simon paved the way for the Tritons, finishing with an overall score of 3-over 219 after carding a 74 on the final day.  Simon, who shot a 71 in round one, finished in a two-way tie for 15th place with Cal State San Marcos' Adam Loran.

Simon finished two strokes in front of teammate Keith Okasaki, who shot a 75 in the final round to finish at 5-over par and claim a share of 19th place. Freshman Jacob Williams was UCSD's next-highest finisher at 7-over 223 after carding a final-round 74, while Anubhav Rastogi fired a 76 to round out the scoring for the Tritons at 227.

College of the Canyons, which held a two-stroke lead over Sonoma State entering the final round, shot a 294 to win the team title at 4-over par 868.

TENNIS

The UC San Diego women's tennis team swept Villanova 9-0 on Friday afternoon at Northview Tennis Courts. The Tritons won five of their six singles matches in straight sets. Melissa Breisacher was the lone UCSD player to go three sets. Samantha Yeung won her match in the No. 4 slot, 6-0, 6-0.

Taskeen Bains won her singles match 6-2, 6-2, then paired with Haley Perrotte for an 8-4 win in doubles. The No. 2 duo of Cindy Dao and Jacquelyn Davis won by the same score.
