Tuesday will be proclaimed "SDSU Men's Basketball Day" in the city of San Diego in honor of the Aztecs' 31-5 record, Mountain West regular season championship and Sweet 16 appearance.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilwoman Marti Emerald are scheduled to bestow the honor at the council meeting beginning at 10 a.m. at City Hall.

Their proclamation lauds the team's achievements, calling the 2013-14 season "one of the finest in school and city history." Also noted, among other things, are the January victory at Kansas, the Mountain West Coach of the Year honor for Steve Fisher and conference Player of the Year award for guard Xavier Thames.

"The Aztecs further showed that while there is no 'I' in team, there is definitely an 'X,' as in Xavier Thames," the proclamation says.

Faulconer, who frequently tossed a "go Aztecs" remark into his stump speeches, and Emerald are both longtime supporters of SDSU athletics. However, the mayoral campaign limited Faulconer's attendance to just one men's basketball contest this year -- the regular season finale.
