UCSD holds a three-game lead entering the final week of CCAA play, thanks to a 13-game winning streak.

The UC San Diego baseball team cushioned its lead in the league and completed a four-game series sweep of Chico State with a tight 11-10 victory Sunday at Nettleton Stadium for its 13th straight victory. No. 7 UCSD, which entered the series a game behind 20th-ranked Chico State for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), now owns a three-game lead in the hunt for the regular season title.

The Tritons are 34-12 overall and 25-12 in the CCAA.The Wildcats, losers of their last five, fell to 27-14 overall and 21-13 in the conference.

“Beating LMU to win this championship was really special,” said UCSD head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. “They have been so dominant and had a 37-match conference winning streak coming in. It was very sweet to be able to break that run.”

The Lions led 9-7 and 10-8 in the final stanza, but UCSD scored three unanswered to take an 11-10 lead.

Kimberly Benedetti evened the score for LMU, but Crowell scored the game-winner with 1:59 to play and Katherine Biehle added another on their way to a two-goal victory.

Crowell, Bates and Lizotte were WWPA First Team selections while Natalie Peng was placed on the Second Team.

SOFTBALL

The No. 8 UC San Diego softball team fell to Sonoma State 1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship game on Sunday afternoon at Arnaiz Field in Stockton.

SSU ace Samantha Lipperd (25-8) held the Tritons hitless, out-dueling Camille Gaito (26-4), who gave up just five hits and a solo home run to SSU's Brittany Martinez in the second inning.

Lipperd forced UCSD to leave eight runners on base, getting herself out of many jams including a bases-loaded threat in the third inning.

UCSD (36-13) went 2-2 at this year's tournament, falling to SSU (36-20) two times in as many days. The Seawolves, now back-to-back CCAA tournament champions, have won seven straight CCAA tournament games dating back to last season. It was also the second no-hitter for Lipperd this season and the fourth of her career.

As of Sunday, UCSD was the top-ranked team in the West Region and will likely have one of the higher seeds in this weekend’s West Regional at a site still to be determined. The Tritons will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009.

Jennifer De Fazio, Sarah Woofter and Gaito were named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.

Gaito threw her third complete-game two-hitter and senior Kris Lesovsky homered to lead the Tritons to  a 2-0 win over  Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday in the opening game of the 2011 CCAA) Softball Tournament at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton.

On Saturday, UCSD lost to Sonoma State, 5-2,  in its opening game in the winner's bracket as the Seawolves racked-up 14 hits.

In its second game, the Tritons outlasted Cal State Dominguez Hills, 6-2, to earn a ticket to the CCAA Championship against Sonoma State. UCSD had to beat SSU twice on Sunday to win the conference title.

The Tritons captured three individual All-CCAA softball awards as junior e Gaito was tabbed Pitcher of the Year, Mya Romero was named Freshman of the Year and Patti Gerckens was selected Coach of the Year.

Gaito, along with senior centerfielder Kris Lesovsky, was also an All-CCAA First Team selection. Romero was tabbed to the All-CCAA Second Team, along with senior third baseman, Sarah Woofter. This season marks the third time since 2007 UCSD has had four players named to an All-CCAA squad in the same year.

A year after winning Co-CCAA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2010, Gaito has posted a 26-4 overall record, 0.53 ERA and 21 complete games in 2011. In 173 innings, she has recorded 142 strikeouts and limited opposing batters to a .179 average.

She leads the CCAA in ERA and wins, in addition to holding the second-lowest ERA in NCAA Division II. She has eight shutouts and has recorded double-digit strikeout totals twice this season. She struck-out a career high 12 batters over nine innings in her latest start on April 23.

Romero has put together a solid rookie campaign and she is one of two Tritons to start all 45 games this season. She is hitting .321 with 27 runs, 12 doubles and 23 RBI. She leads the Tritons with nine multiple-hit games this year, matching Lesovsky for a team-high 42 hits. Romero is the only UCSD player to record four RBI in a single game (March 5 vs. Humboldt State) and she accounted for a season-high seven total bases against Notre Dame de Namur on Feb. 4.

UCSD has placed a freshman on the Second Team for the second straight year after Nicole Spangler’s selection in 2010.

For Lesovsky, who comes into this postseason as UCSD’s all-time leader in career batting average (.407) and walks (105), it is the third consecutive season that she has been selected to the All-CCAA First Team. The leadoff hitter, Lesovsky leads the Tritons in runs (37), doubles (15), homeruns (5), total bases (72), walks (38) and slugging percentage (.567) in 2011. She has also garnered All-American and All-West Region honors in each of the last two seasons.

She recorded a seven-game hit-streak between March 4-12 and has hit .387 (12-for-31) with eight runs, three RBI, three stolen bases since April 8. Woofter has been hit by a pitch 31 times in her career, more than any current UCSD player. She is 10th in UCSD annals with 273 career assists and leads the current Triton squad with 84 helpers this season from the left side of the infield.

Gerckens guided UCSD to a school record .755 winning percentage and matched a school record with 34 wins (for Division II) during the regular season. The Tritons' 22 conference victories match the school record (2004) and the team's win percentage (.710) in the CCAA is a program-best since UCSD joined the conference in 2001. Gerckens is 474-431 (.524) over her 19 seasons at the helm.

After a bad start, the Tritons' novice eight was able to get into a tight pack with OCC and Gonzaga. It was a neck-and-neck race that came right down to the wire, with the Pirates taking the crown. The Bulldogs would finish second followed by the Tritons in third.

Zach Johnson was named WIRA Coach of the Year for the third year in a row following a strong final day of competition from his charges. With the conference title under their belts, the Tritons will advance to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships June 2-4 in Camden, N.J.
