Top Women's Seeds McBridge and Nideffer Advance to 3rd Round in USTA Tournament

Defending men's singles champion Oren Motevassel moves into fourth round.

Editor's Note: La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club released the follow standings on Nov. 27, 2012.

Top seeded Dina McBride of Woodland Hills and second-seeded Ros Nideffer of Rancho Bernardo won singles matches earlier today to advance to the third round of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships.

Playing under mostly sunny skies at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, McBride breezed past Tai Sisson of San Dimas, Calif., 6-1, 6-0 in a second-round match. McBride, who played collegiate tennis for the University of San Diego in the mid-1990s, reached last year’s women’s singles final.

Nideffer, a former touring tennis professional and a two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist, eliminated Julie Gaynor of Las Vegas, 6-3, 6-1, in a second-round encounter.

Earlier this year, the 52-year-old Nideffer captured the Women’s 50 singles title at the ITF Seniors World Individual Championships and USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships. Both events were played at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

When asked what inspired her to play in this week’s National 40 Hard Court Championships, she responded, “I just felt like I couldn’t watch it go by and not participate. It’s nice to have something to focus on and to keep myself in shape and try to keep myself young.”

It is obvious Nideffer’s competitive fire on the tennis court is still alive. “I want to win it,” she said with a smile. “I would just like to play well. I really don’t know the competition so I have to just focus on my own game, try to get my serve going, be aggressive and go for my shots.”

In men’s singles action on Tuesday, top-seeded Oren Motevassel reached the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Carter Hedrick of Manhattan Beach.  Third-seeded Jeff Greenwald of San Anselmo and fourth-seeded Martin Barba of San Diego also advanced to the fourth round with straight set victories.

In addition to men’s and women’s singles, the National 40 Hard Court doubles and mixed doubles events are scheduled.  Also on the agenda is the USTA National Father and Son and Grandfather and Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships beginning Friday, November 30, with matches concluding Sunday, December 2.
