The Horses Are in the Gate! Del Mar Season Opens
The seaside track opened by Bing Crosby in 1937 welcomes its 72nd racing season Wednesday.
The Del Mar thoroughbred racing season kicks off Wednesday at the seaside track with the usual hoopla, including the ever-popular and a 10-race card featuring the 66th running of the Oceanside Stakes.
A record opening day crowd of 44,907 turned out last year, when the track went to a five-day-a-week race program. That will be retained this year, the 72nd season of racing, with the track dark on both Mondays (except Labor Day) and Tuesdays over the 37-day racing season that runs through Sept. 7.
First post is at 2 p.m., with the exception of all Fridays (4 p.m.) and on Pacific Classic Day (Sunday, Aug. 28, 1 p.m.). Except for opening day, clubhouse admission is $10 and Stretch Run admission is $6, excluding a seat, which goes for another $5 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, $8 more on Fridays, and an additional $10 on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day. On-site parking is $10.
