Tennis Tournaments Start at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Monday

National Senior Women's Hard Court Tennis Championships and the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's Annual Spring Senior Championships for men runs though Sunday in La Jolla.

Age does not slow down these athletes.

The is hosting the United States Tennis Association (USTA)’s National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships, which start Monday and run through Sunday. Events include both singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over and even 90 and over age groups. These athletes are the best players nationally.

Among this year’s entries in the National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championship are local players Rosalyn Nideffer of Rancho Bernardo ( win the International Tennis Federation Senior World Individual Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in February) and Escondido’s Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney ( of Cheney’s entry from last year’s tourney).

Nideffer played on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour from the late 1970s though the late 1990s. She was a two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist and two-time French Open doubles champion.

Cheney, who is playing doubles in the women’s 90 and over division, is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. She has won 390 national titles during her professional tennis career.

“It is going to be an incredible week of tennis,” said Bill Kellogg, tournament director and President of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in an announcement. “We have the best senior players coming from all across the United States. Fans will be able to see a wide range of playing styles which makes for a very entertaining viewing experience.”

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 40th Annual Spring Senior Championships for men will also take place the same week in conjunction with the women’s events. The men’s event will include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over and 80 and over.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club said a combined total of over 300 players are expected to participate in the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. from Monday through Friday, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Admission to the week-long tournament is free and open to the public. There is a fee for parking. To following the tournament online visit this site.
