Rough Water Swim Set for Sunday at La Jolla Cove

More than 2,000 swimmers will compete in an event that dates back to 1916.

Barring any more shark sightings, the 81st annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim, one of the premier open-water swimming competitions in the nation, will take place at La Jolla Cove on Sunday, with the first race going off at 9 a.m. and the last set for about 1:30 p.m.

More than 2,000 swimmers are expected to compete in evets that range from 250 yards for juniors, to a mile for masters and amateurs, to three miles for the gatorman swim.

From its start in 1916, the event developed into a truly annual event in the early 1930s. The last two times it was not held came in 1948, when concerns over polio wiped out the event, and in 1959, when shark sighting in the media actually did force the race to be canceled.
