La Jolla Tennis Club Holds 95th Annual Championships

The event on the Draper Avenue courts is the nation's oldest tournament continuously held at the same venue.

More than 1,200 players are expected to participate in the 95th annual La Jolla Tennis Championships that opened Friday and will run through July 3 at the La Jolla Tennis Club's nine public courts on Draper Avenue.

The club will crown champions in such divisions as the Open events, featuring many of the top players in the area; Junior events for players 10 to 18; age division events for players 35 to 80; class events for beginning to advanced players; and family events pairing husband and wives, fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons and mothers and daughters.

The La Jolla Tennis Championships began in 1917 and is the nation's oldest tennis tournament continuously held at the same venue. Such noted tennis personalities as Maureen Connolly, Tracy Austin, Rene Richards, Dodo Cheney and La Jolla Country Day product Alexandra Stevenson have competed in the tournament, which is open to the public and free of charge.
