La Jolla High's Karly Zlatic Named Academic Athlete of the Year

La Jolla High School soccer and track star Karly Zlatic has been named the 2012-13 Academic Athlete of the Year by U-T San Diego.

“Sports bring memories,” Zlatic told the newspaper. “I’ll remember winning CIF and the feeling I received after nailing the last penalty kick for years and years to come. It’s going to stick with me. I think that’s why I accept the sacrifices that come with being a student-athlete and put in the extra time to do my best.”

Zlatic, who earned a 4.56 GPA and plans to attend Harvard, shares the honor with Westview High School's Ryan Pineda. Her high school sports career has included many highlights, including scoring the deciding goal in the Division III section championship soccer game against Cathedral Catholic in 2011 and being named to the All-CIF girls soccer second team in March.
