La Jolla Country Day Preps for Tough Coastal League

The Torreys move from the Pacific League to one of the most competitive small-school leagues in the state.

La Jolla Country Day began its football season last weekend with a 23-12 victory over Tri-City Christian, a team that took down the Torreys on the way to the Pacific League title last year.

It was a good tuneup for LJCD since this season it has moved into the always-competitive Coastal League with the likes of state champion and crosstown rival Bishop's as well as Francis Parker.

Junior quarterback Eddie Garcia had completed just three passes when he was forced out of the game with a shoulder injury, so the Torreys stayed mostly on the ground while overcoming a 12-7 halftime deficit with 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Junior tailback Sage Burmeister gained 114 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown, and Colin McMahon ran for 64 yards and a score and had two catches for 31 yards.

The defensive standout was junior linebacker Josh Church, who had a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter. With LJCD ahead 16-12, he returned one for a 12-yard TD that gave LJCD some breathing room.
