Harry Potter Fans on the Field

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2" comes out in theaters on Friday, but UC San Diego fans have been taking their love of the J.K. Rowling series to the fields for nearly a year.

UC San Diego students love Harry Potter. At least the Quidditch team does. Quidditch is a broom-wielding sport inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Students established a UC San Diego co-ed club team last year and joined the International Quidditch Association. We swear an International Quidditch Association exists. We contacted them.

“Playing Quidditch is beneficial because it allows students to experience a sport that was originally designed for a fantasy world,” said UC San Diego Quidditch team co-captain Nicholas Johnsen in a statement. “Quidditch differs from other sports. The object is to enjoy being a part of a fantastical game that engages players in a fantastical culture.”

Wondering how to play Quidditch? We were too. The game is best described as a semi-contact sport that is a mix between basketball, dodgeball, rugby and tag.

If that answer is not detailed enough, you can read the full rules here.
