Faulk in the Running at Celebrity Golf at Morgan Run

Fomer Major League pitcher Mark Mulder holds a two-stroke lead and posted a four-under par 67 for the first 18 holes of the 36-hole hosted by Drew Brees at Morgan Run Club & Resort in Rancho Santa Fe. Mulder leads another former MLB star, Vince Coleman, by two shots.

“To be invited, help Drew with his charity work, and to get to know athletes from other sports is great,” said Mulder. “It’s nice to be in the lead, but (Sunday) will be a whole new level in terms of play and pressure.”

The championship, which crowns the nation’s best celebrity golfer, continues Sunday with the first players teeing off at 10 a.m. The final group, comprised of Mulder, Coleman and former Aztec and NFL great Marshall Faulk, will tee off at 11:20 a.m.

 The San Diego State University product and NFL Hall of Fame electee stands at one-under (70), along with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Four-time champion Rick Rhoden is in fifth place after an even-par 71 on Saturday.

There is a four-way log jam at sixth place: former Padres player Kurt Bevacqua, ESPN analyst and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer (the 2001 tournament winner), former NHL great and the first-ever tournament champion Dan Quinn, and 2010 champion Jack Wagner are all at 1-over.

Cox Celebrity Championship host Drew Brees posted an 83 (+12) Saturday. The tournament, in its 13th year, benefits the Brees Dream Foundation.
