Despite dense fog that significantly slowed play at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course last month, the PGA reported significant increases in TV ratings and ticket sale.
Sales increased 40 percent from last year, the PGA said Tuesday. Golf fans came out to see Tiger Woods clinch his eighth victory at Torrey Pines on Monday, Jan. 28. Woods joined a handful of other big name players including Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson to play for $6.1 million in prize money.

While TV ratings are always high for the Farmers Insurance Open, because it falls on the open weekend between the AFC and NFC title games and the Super Bowl, ratings were even higher this year. First round coverage on the Golf Channel was up 66 percent over last year, the PGA reported, and Friday's second round coverage was up 90 percent over last year. In addition, Golf Channel's Lead-in Coverage on Saturday's third round was up 299 percent over last year, and the most of that day was delayed due to fog.
