Summer Camp: Shark Encounters

Small fry are getting hands-on with some toothy creatures this summer through a Birch Aquarium educational program that's taking the bite out of the scary side of sharks.

Youngsters in grades 4-6 are learning all about sharks—their biology and behavior, and what's being done to protect them—through a variety of seeing and doing activities.

Led by Andy Nosal, a Scripps Oceanography marine biologist who studies leopard sharks along La Jolla Shores, campers become shark experts as they investigate and make observations, and participate in hands-on encounters while they explore the ocean from top to bottom.

Campers can also snorkel with local sharks and meet Scripps Oceanography shark researchers  during the Summer Learning Adventure Camp, which goes on all week.
