Grunion Runs with Birch Aquarium

Come see the grunion runs with Birch Aquarium.

From April to early June, you can observe the mysterious grunion spawn on the beaches of La Jolla. During the runs, female grunion bury themselves half-way in the sand to lay eggs, while males wrap themselves protectively around the females to fertilize their eggs. Both catch a wave to return to sea.

You'll be led by Birch Aquarium at Scripps naturalists to viewing spots at different beaches. The schedule for the rare sight is below. Bring a flashlight and warm jacket.

2012 Season:
• Sunday, April 8: 10:45 p.m.–12:45 a.m.
• Monday, April 23: 10:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m.
• Monday, May 7: 10:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m.
• Tuesday, May 22: 10:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m.
