CIF Baseball: Torreys Rally Late to Reach Semifinals

LJCD gets two in the seventh and the game-winner in the eighth by Alex Guenette to edge Mater Dei.

It was sweet revenge for the La Jolla Country Day Torreys Friday as they edged visiting Mater Dei Catholic 3-2 in eight innings in the second round of the San Diego CIF Division IV baseball playoffs.

The Crusaders had handed the Torreys their two losses and knocked them out of the 2010 double-elimination tournament.

Second-seeded LJCD (23-7) needed a come-from-behind effort to knock off No. 3 seed Mater Dei this time.

In the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Torres drew a leadoff walk for the Torreys, and stole second.  With one out, Alex Guenette hit a line-drive base hit to right center to score Torres with the game-winner.

The Torreys, scoreless through six innings, needed a pair of runs in the seventh to avoid a loss in regulation. Dustin Hughes led off with a double and Guenette followed with a walk.  Sam Ayala earned his second hit of the day, driving in Eddie Garcia who was running for Hughes.

Frankie Brown then laid down a bunt along the third base line that was fielded by the Crusader third baseman, but elusive pinch runner Zach Feldman avoided the tag attempt.

With the bases loaded, Nathan Michalski hit a ground ball to a drawn-in infielder who threw to the plate. But the catcher was unable to keep his foot on the dish and Feldman slid in safely to tie the game.

The victory sends the Torreys into Tuesday's 3:30 p.m. semifinal game, where they will host the winner of Saturday’s Mater Dei-Christian elimination contest.
