The won a state championship in football in 2010, but the Knights won't have a chance to defend that crown after falling to Santa Fe Christian 42-6 Friday night in a San Diego Section Division V semifinal game played at Carlsbad High.
Top-seeded Santa Fe Christian (11-1) of Solana Beach, which lost its season opener to Westview but has since won 11 straight, advances to play No. 2 seed Christian in next Friday's Division V championship at Mesa College. El Cajon-based Christian earned its berth with a 63-42 win over No. 3 Francis Parker on Friday.
SFC, which had beaten Bishop's 56-13 in a regular-season meeting, grabbed a 21-0 halftime lead by holding the Knights to 62 yards and three first downs over the opening two quarters. The Eagles had nearly 400 yards of offense in the game to just under 200 yards for the Knights.
"They're a good football team," Bishop's coach Joel Allen told the North County Times. "You don't go 10-1 and beat the teams they have without being really, really efficient. That's what they are. They're efficient. They're smart. They don't make mistakes."
The Knights (6-6) had played in the last four Division V title games, using a win last year over Parker as a springboard to a state championship. They went 2-6 over their last eight games after starting the season with four straight victories.
Joey Moreno connected with Dominique Love on a 56-yard scoring play for the Knights' only touchdown. Running back Grant Lucier scored four TDs for Santa Fe Christian.
