Attend the Brian Schultz Golf Classic to Raise Funds for Cancer Research

The annual tournament has raised nearly $1 million for research to fight cancer.

Editor's Note: UC San Diego released the following announcement.

The annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic will take place Saturday, August 10 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, with proceeds benefiting cancer research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The event will feature a golf tournament, banquet and entertainment—all to support the quest to conquer cancer. The golf classic was established in 1994 by friends and family as a way to remember Brian Schultz, who passed away after a sudden and brief battle with cancer at the age of 27.

“Brian loved golf and he introduced many of his friends to the sport,” said Doug Gans, one of Schultz’s close friends and an organizer of the event. “A golf tournament seemed like the most fitting way to honor his memory, while supporting the fight to cure cancer.”

Now in its 18th year, the Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic has raised nearly $1 million to support research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. The center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region.

“We appreciate the generosity of our dedicated event donors and sponsors,” said Scott Lippman, MD, director of the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. “Support from the Brian Schultz Golf Classic helps fuel innovative research and advancements that ultimately translate into more effective treatments for cancer patients.”

A portion of proceeds from the event will also fund the Brian Schultz Memorial Scholarship, which partners with San Diego State University—Schultz’s alma mater—to provide scholarships for students whose lives have been adversely affected by cancer. To date, the event has provided undergraduate scholarships to 18 deserving students.

The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with registration, a putting contest and box lunch. The tournament follows atnoon, and the evening will close with an awards banquet, silent and live auctions, a band and dancing. Attendees are invited to bring their children, who will be entertained with arts and crafts, games, Wii stations, a pizza dinner and movies at the Kids Club.

The player entry fee is $225 and includes the banquet and a golf shirt. Banquet-only tickets are available for $60; Kids Club tickets are $45.
