Allard Rejoins UCSD Men's Basketball Staff as Associate Head Coach

Former UC San Diego standout player and assistant coach Clint Allard has returned to the La Jolla campus as Associate Head Coach of the men's basketball program. The announcement was made Thursday by Head Coach Eric Olen.

Allard played for UCSD from 2004-08 and then spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Tritons. Most recently, he was with fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member school Cal Poly Pomona as an assistant coach for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

"I am excited to bring Clint back to UC San Diego," said Olen. "Not only is he one of the most successful players to put on a Triton uniform, but he is also a tremendous coach, recruiter and teacher."

In 2013-14, Cal Poly Pomona finished with an impressive 22-7 record and placed second in the CCAA with a 19-3 mark. The Broncos advanced to the NCAA West Regional, defeating Dixie State before an overtime loss to Cal State Stanislaus in the second round ended their season. For the second-straight year, Cal Poly Pomona had the top-ranked defense in the country. The Broncos held a No. 24 national ranking at the conclusion of the season.

Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a tremendous 2012-13 campaign as well, going 28-3 overall to match the program record set by the 2009-10 national championship squad. The Broncos secured their first-ever outright CCAA regular season crown (20-2 record) as well as their first league tournament title. They went 1-1 in NCAA West Regional play. Cal Poly Pomona spent 16 consecutive weeks ranked among the nation's top-25, finishing at No. 5.

Allard joined the UC San Diego coaching staff prior to its 2008-09 campaign.

In his first year, the Tritons went 17-11 overall and three players were named All-CCAA. In total, UCSD earned seven All-CCAA selections, as well as a league Freshman of the Year pick, during Allard's time with the team.

In 2010-11 and 2011-12, the Tritons won the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic. 

Allard's coaching experience includes coordinating recruiting, travel, camps, scouting, video/film operations, team equipment, academic oversight and community outreach. He also has extensive knowledge in player development, running individual workouts for both post and perimeter players.

A four-year starter and three-time team captain at UCSD, Allard posted career averages of 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.2 steals in 112 games as a Triton.

One of the most prolific players the program has ever seen, Allard's name can be found all over the UCSD record books. The former Archbishop Mitty High School product ranks fourth in all-time career assists (414) and 10th in career assist average (3.7). His 1,150 career points rank in the top-15 in school history.

In terms of UCSD's Division II-era (since 2000-01) records, Allard ranks first in steals (130) and minutes played (3,378); second in assists (414), assist average (3.7), steal average (1.2) and games played (112); third in points (1,150), field goals attempted (835), free throws made (299), free throws attempted (402) and average minutes (30.2); fourth in field goals made (364); fifth in three-pointers made (123) and rebounds (387); sixth in three-pointers attempted (320); and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.384).

In 2007-08, Allard was named to the All-CCAA Second Team after averaging 9.8 points and career-highs in rebounds (3.9), assists (4.6) and steals (1.2). He also earned All-CCAA Tournament Team honors that season after leading the Tritons to their first conference tourney championship with a 64-56 win over Cal Poly Pomona. The victory advanced UCSD to the NCAA Division II West Regional for the first time. The Tritons went on to finish the season with an overall record of 18-1, the program's best mark at the D-II level.

As a freshman in 2004-05, Allard led the Tritons in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per game over 26 contests.

Allard graduated from UCSD in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management science. In 2010, he earned a master's degree in coaching and athletic administration in exercise and sports science from Concordia in Irvine. 

"Clint brings energy, enthusiasm and a strong work ethic to our program and I know that our players will benefit from his leadership," said Olen. "His experience as both a player and coach here at UCSD makes this an easy transition and his familiarity with the university, the CCAA and our players and staff will allow him to make an immediate impact."

Allard replaces Gerred Link, who recently accepted a head coaching position at Moorpark College in Ventura County.
