7 Badass Business Women in San Diego: Jennie J Sullins

Jennie J. Sullins has been in love with photography since she was an itty bitty. She  loved the feel of the glossy magazine pages underneath her fingertips. Just like a dedicated artist, Jennie began painting her surroundings with what inspired her: keeping her nose in Vogue, hands on scissors, and eyes behind the lens. She consistently studied hair, makeup, design, lighting and all the components to creating a powerful image.  As a photographer, makeup artist, and brilliant hair stylist, this young woman is transforming San Diego, “Fashion, art, and culture is associated with LA, unfortunately, San Diego gets overlooked, it would be wonderful if this city became a hub of creativity--my goal and contribution to San Diego is to keep pursuing creative projects, and to keep our city on the up”. Jennie J. is like that of Jean Michel, a natural talent with an insatiable passion that requires a drive and vision crazy enough to make someone an entrepreneur.

“I found a local community college that used Vanity Fair as a text book, that was my first experience with portrait lighting, the teacher literally combined my love of magazines and photography. If someone couldn’t teach me or there wasn’t a specific program I would find the how-to somewhere and teach myself. If I have to make business cards, I take an illustrator class and attempt it; it’s my MO, anything can be taught”. Learn. Do. Conquer.  Her D.I.Y. skills have led to beautiful editorial spreads and powerful portraits. Jennie builds sets with her clients, demonstrating them in their natural environment. She learned about creating an atmosphere that is fun and relaxed, after her years in front of the camera as a model.

Her creative expertise is also personal, sincere, and thoughtful, "I value the intimacy I have with my clients, I have watched my clientele grow up, have children, fall in love. I have cut hair knowing that this might be the only opportunity that my clients will have alone; I see it as an opportunity to pick my clients up and have them walking out looking incredible."
