UCSD's Bike and Skate Shop Moves Into Larger Space

Campus Bike and Skate Shop recently completed a renovation. In addition to bike and skateboard sales, the shop rents and repairs bikes.

A new quarter, a new name and a new place.

Formerly known as UCSD Bike Shop, the newly christened Campus Bike and Skate shop is operating out of a larger space just across from its old location.

“We were just exploding out of that older spot, so we swapped positions with the general store,” said Kris Wells, manager of Campus Bike and Skate. “We’ve seen a lot more volume in the past few years with gas prices rising, campus development taking away parking and biking has become more fashionable.”

For some students at , riding a bike makes more sense than commuting by car.

“I live fairly close and biking is the perfect way to get to class rather than drive and it's environmentally-friendly,” said sophomore Alex Herrmann.

Previously operating out of an 1,100-square-foot building, Campus Bike and Skate now has more than 2,000 square feet to rent, sell and repair products from. The extra room has allowed the shop to carry more bikes, bike parts, bike products and skateboards – as the name change reflects. Additionally, the service area is larger, which gives the shop the ability to perform more repairs, according to Wells.

Campus Bike and Skate Shop’s future plans go beyond taking advantage of increased square footage. Last spring, the shop held its first movie night to encourage students to bike to campus. Wells would like to make community-minded events such as movie nights and organized cruises around campus regular occurrences.

Rather than celebrating the completed renovation, Wells is holding off on a Grand Opening for the time being.

“My priority right now is the amount of traffic we have until the end of October,” Wells said. “It’s busier than any super sale at any bike shop I’ve seen.”
