Torreys Unbeaten Heading Into Tough League

La Jolla Country Day won 42-3 against Escondido Charter on Friday night.

The La Jolla Country Day football team finished out their non-league schedule a perfect 5-0 by downing D. IV Escondido Charter 42-3. The Torreys will open league play in the ultra tough Coastal League vs. Horizon Christian Academy next Friday night, Oct. 14 at Scripps Ranch HS at 7:30 PM.

The Coastal League is considered to be the most competitive small school football league in California. LJCD has not won a Coastal League game since 1999 when they beat Horizon 44-42. Country Day beat Coastal member Bishop’s 22-21 in 2008 but the Torreys were not Coastal League members at the time. Last night, the Torreys showed terrific offensive balance in gaining 203 yds. on the ground and 189 yds. passing. RB Sage Burmeister ’13 led all Country Day ball carriers with 147 yds. on 18 carries with TD runs of 19, 7, 4 and 40 yds. FB Colin McMahon ‘13 was a terrific counter punch to Sage gaining 50 yds. on 6 carries with 2 TD’s (18, 6 yds.). QB Eddie Garcia ‘13 was 13 for 18 passing for 189 yds. and did not throw an interception. WR Daniel Henry ’12 led all Torrey receivers with 100 yds. on 4 catches. McMahon caught 2 passes for 57 yds., TE Nick Schlossberg ’12 caught 4 passes for 4 yds and Burmeister caught 2 passes for 9 yds.

The Big Blue defense shut down the White Tiger’s heavy running game putting them in 3rd and long situations all night. Schlossberg led the team in tackles with 10 stops (7 solos). Nick also recovered a ECHS fumble. LBer josh Church ’13 also had an outstanding night making 9 tackles (5 solos) and a sack. DE Nate Michalski ’13 recorded 8 tackles and hard hitting safety Tyler Sheflo ’13 made 6 tackles.

Kicker Leigh Wallace ‘13 was a perfect 6 for 6 on his PAT’s and hit deep kick offs all night.
