The Gillispie School Breaks Ground on Playing Field

The field is 7,500 square feet of outdoor space for education and fun.

The Gillispie School held a groundbreaking ceremony for its “Field of Dreams” on Tuesday morning. The sports field is a 7,500 square-foot lot adjacent to the backside of the school on the 7400 block of Fay Avenue in La Jolla.

The school purchased the land with a single-family residence last fall for $1.05 million. To date, parents have donated $1.6 million towards the school’s fundraising campaign of $1.75 million for the project.

Already, the property was demolished and crews will begin working on removing foundation.

The school reported that the new field will nearly double the size of its current outdoor space. It will include a turf playing field and seating area.

Head of School Alison Fleming thanked the many parents and faculty for their participating in making the Field of Dreams a reality.

“Dreams just don’t come happen because you want them to. Dreams come true because people work together and work really, really hard,” said Fleming.

The field is expected to be complete in late spring.
