The Children's School To Host Great Artists Grande Finale Exhibit

The Children's School classrooms will be transformed into creative art museums showcasing the children's art on Thursday.

Art lovers of all ages are invited to join The Children’s School in celebrating the fifteenth annual Great Artists program with the upcoming Grande Finale Art Exhibit. The event will take place on Thursday, April 10 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the school located at 2225 Torrey Pines Lane in La Jolla.

The Great Artists program, which is a unique hallmark of The Children’s School, encourages children from toddler age through eighth grade to develop an appreciation of art as they study specific artists’ style and explore a variety of art mediums. During the six-week program, students explore the life, work and artistic style of the chosen artist through an integrated curriculum consisting of developmentally appropriate activities in language arts, math, social studies, science and art. As with other project-based learning experiences at TCS, much of the content covered emerges from the unique interests of the students.

“Research has shown that art is a critically important part of a well-balanced education. Elementary students who experience art as an integral part of the classroom curriculum consistently outperform in math and reading compared to peers who do not have such experiences,” said Evelyn Terry, head of the school. “We are also excited to invite families from outside of our school community to share in learning more about art through our exhibit. Especially now that so many children are not able to experience art as part of their day-to-day learning, we invite families to join us and learn how children can really open their minds to art appreciation.”

Art teacher Carrie Difini states, “Children thrive in an environment where art is viewed as an adventure and an exploration of ideas and perspective. Because we focus on the process of art rather than the product, our students have only themselves to please as they paint, glue, scribble, splatter and sculpt. And by studying the works of great artists, students gain a deeper appreciation for art and its styles and techniques.”

The Great Artists Grande Finale Gala is an evening that will delight and surprise. The classrooms are transformed into creative art museums showcasing the children’s artistic endeavors and the depth of learning that the program encourages. The school invites the public to discover how great works of art from masters can inspire a true appreciation of the fine arts in children.
