Student Art On Display at La Jolla Elementary

La Jolla Elementary School is having an art show this week with a special reception on Thursday.

Creativity is on full display over at the La Jolla Elementary School (LJES) auditorium and you can check out the work of future artists.

The is running through Friday at the school’s auditorium. Thursday night will hold a special reception celebrating the students and their artwork they’ve produced this year thanks to art teacher Sonya Devine.

“The school auditorium has been transformed into an art gallery with more than 600 pieces of art on display,” said art show chair Erica Wortham, who has three children enrolled at the elementary school. “The work varies from wood block style prints, tiny studies of soups cans painted with acrylic on canvas, paper mâché creatures of all kinds, self portraits, animal studies, bright pastel bridge drawings, tissue paper collages that dangle in the sunshine.”

Thursday’s reception is a chance for the community and parents to view the art and even purchase some of their favorites. The students’ artwork has been reproduced on notecards that will be available for purchase for $15 for a 12-pack of cards, with proceeds benefiting the more art.

“We were looking for a way to turn the art show into a fund raising opportunity for our school's art program,” Wortham said. “Last year we started selling individualized note cards with the child's art and they sold really well. It's a useful way to honor their work.”

“[The art show] is a great opportunity to celebrate children's art and our schools art program,” Wortham said. “It's so important and for many kids, it’s their favorite—and best—subject.”
