SDUSD Considers 920 Staff Cuts, Including 24 in La Jolla

The San Diego Unified School District's Board of Education will meet today to discuss cutting positions to offset the budget deficit.

The San Diego Unified School District will consider eliminating more than 900 full-time positions, including 24 in La Jolla, to balance next school year's budget at a school board meeting this afternoon. The cuts will help offest a projected $120 million deficit for the 2011-12 school year.

The 920 positions are mostly full-time jobs, but some part-time employees share positions, so the actual number of employees receiving layoff notices is expected to be higher.

About half of the proposed cuts will affect elementary school teachers. Proposed cuts also include 13 librarians, 59 counselors, 42 nurses, five psychologists and 38 special education staff members.
