SDG&E Awards UCSD $7.2M for Green Projects

The UCSD campus, which was recently named the grand champion of the SDG&E Energy Champions program, has 14 buildings that meet stringent energy efficiency standards.

On Friday, San Diego Gas & Electric awarded $7.2 million to UC San Diego, which has implemented 30 energy efficiency projects around campus in the last three years.

The utility said the efficiency improvements helped save 21 million kilowatt hours and 2.1 million therms of natural gas, and reduced more than 2 megawatts of demand.

The savings are equivalent to the removal of more than 5,000 cars off the road, powering nearly 4,000 homes for a year, or preventing the emission of more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, according to SDG&E.

"This recognition from San Diego Gas & Electric is a great example of how UC San Diego's commitment to energy efficiency and protecting the environment helps our campus control costs, conserve resources and contribute to a more sustainable future," he said.
