Peanut Butter Recall Does Not Impact SDUSD Schools

San Diego Unified School District officials reminded parents on Friday that peanut butter is not on the menu in its schools.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to expand the recall of peanut butter and peanut butter products, but recall is not a concern of the San Diego Unified School District.

On Friday, the district reminded parents in its weekly newsletter that it does not serve peanut butter at its 225 schools and facilities, including Bird Rock, La Jolla and Torrey Pines elementary schools. It reported that peanut butter has not been on the menu at SDUSD schools for several years, due to allergy concerns.

"The Food Services Department does not serve any peanut butter or peanut products anywhere in our district," said Gary Petill, Food Services Director in the newsletter. "Sunbutter is used in our elementary school items that have traditionally used peanut butter. It's a similar product that is made from specially roasted sunflower seeds, it is completely peanut-free, tree-nut free and gluten-free."
