Local Public Schools Show Gains on Test Scores
La Jolla students showed improvements on standardized tests.
More students in San Diego public schools had advanced and proficient scores in math and English on the latest round of standardized testing, according to results released Monday by the state Department of Education.
More than 373,000 students took the 2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting program tests in San Diego County, with 60.2 percent scoring advanced or proficient in English-language arts and 54.2 percent in mathematics, according the reports. Both figures represent increases from 2010, when 58 percent of students scored advanced or proficient in English and 52.1 percent achieved those levels in math.
In La Jolla, the percentage of students with advanced or proficient scores in English and math was much higher than state, county and San Diego Unified School District numbers as a whole. Some examples of high marks include 100 percent of second- and third-grade students at scoring proficient or better in math, 97 percent of fourth-grade students at scoring proficient or better in English, and 81 percent of 10th grade students at scoring proficient or better in English.

In the San Diego Unified School District, 58.6 percent of students scored proficient or better in English-language arts, up from 56.1 percent last year. And in math, 54.4 percent scored proficient or better, an increase from 48.6 percent.
“I congratulate all of our students, teachers and staff for this outstanding result,” said SDUSD Superintendent Bill Kowba. “This continued progress comes despite some of the most trying time in the long history of our district, as the budget has had significant cuts each of these years.”
