Local High School Collects 650+ Butts at Beach

North County High School collected more than 650 cigarette butts and 6 pounds of trash in La Jolla Shores on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, 32 students from North County High Tech High volunteered with San Diego Coastkeeper to help clean up La Jolla.

The students teamed up to conduct an assessment of the Matlahuyal Marine Protected Area and a neighborhood pollution patrol, according to Coastkeeper.

They collected more than 650 cigarette butts and more than 6 pounds of trash from the beach and nearby streets.

Coastkeeper said students learned about marine protected areas and the importance of protecting coastal habitats from human pressures and urban runoff.
