La Jolla Students Knit Hats for Preemies at Scripps Memorial Hospital

Six students from The Children's School knit beanies for babies.

Earlier this month six students from The Children's School in La Jolla delivered 19 hand-made knit hats for babies in the NICU at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

The students, who are in first through fourth grades, learned to knit in a class taught by second grade teacher Vanessa Abisror.

The school's director of development Laura Lavoie attended class too. Lavoie's son Luke was born nine weeks early at Scripps Memorial Hospital in May 2012. She wanted to learn to knit and to bring the tiny hats to the hospital to show appreciation for the care and dedication of the staff.

When the students learned why Lavoie was taking their class, they asked if they could make hats for the babies too. Then on Dec. 3, the group was able to deliver their special gifts to the NICU staff in La Jolla.
