La Jolla Student Wins in Congressional Art Competition

La Jolla Country Day School student Fiedlia Speidel won the 52nd Congressional District art competition.

Editor's Note: Congressman Scott Peter's office released the following announcement.

On Wednesday, Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) hosted the winner of the 52nd District’s art competition, Fidelia Speidel, at the Capitol for the winners’ reception of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Speidel is currently a student at La Jolla Country Day School.

“It is my pleasure to host Fidelia here in Washington and continue to highlight the fantastic artwork that she produced for this year’s competition. I was impressed with the caliber of our district’s entries. It is wonderful that Fidelia is able to see where her piece will be hanging on display over the next year, representing the artistic talent of San Diego. As a longtime proponent of arts education and public art, I am happy to support this friendly competition.”

In San Diego, entries were submitted from high school students across the district in the early spring. After being on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s Downtown Gallery, a panel of local art community leaders judged the works and determined a winner that would be the district’s official representative in Washington, DC. A popular vote contest, hosted on the Congressman’s Facebook page, determined a runner-up to be on display in Congressman Peters’ District Office in UTC.
