La Jolla High School Does 'Grease'

The theater students at La Jolla High are putting on a production of "Grease" and it's getting standing ovations.

Get transported back to the 50s and those “summer nights’” at production of the classic musical Grease.

The theater students, under director Ann Boutelle, will perform favorite hits, like “Greased Lightning” and “We Go Together” on stage tonight through Saturday evening.

According to Boutelle, the students lobbied for the show and she agreed to both produce and direct the musical. In an email to Patch, Boutelle said that the experience turned out to be fantastic for the talented crew: actors, singers, dancers, designers, technicians, and the backstage crew.

“The entire company has done outstanding work,” Boutelle said. “We are very proud.”

Though the show premieres for the public tonight at 7 p.m., Kandy Mahaffey, assistant to the principal, said that there was a showing last night and it was well received.

“It was packed,” Mahaffey said. “Everyone stood up and cheered in the end.”

Boutelle said that the show’s sets and costumes were designed by Katherine Ward, a well-known La Jolla portrait artists and designer. She and Ward have worked as a team for ten years, working on shows like Once Upon a Mattress, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Night is My Enemy, The Mousetrap, From Up Here, Noises Off, and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

The chorus is comprised of 16 members. Students who have leading roles include:

  • Danny: Giovanni Moujaes
  • Sandy: Truly Bailey
  • Rizzo: Maddy Harvey (Harvey was also choreographer of the show)
  • Kenicke: Kevin Cruz
  • Other Greasers and Pink Ladies: Sara Phelps, Andy Hill, Jake Huey-Correa, Lauren Nordholm, Michael Dwyer and Hallie Bodenstab
