High School Graduation Requirements Toughened for SDUSD Schools

The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education voted Tuesday night to add computer proficiency as a graduation requirement at its high schools, including La Jolla High.

The board during its regular meeting reversed a previous action that removed computer proficiency as a graduation requirement, effective with the class of 2016. The requirement would be satisfied by taking computer classes and passing a test.

San Diego Unified is one of several large school districts that are toughening graduation standards to bring them into alignment with the so-called "A-G" eligibility requirements of the University of California and California State University systems.

The board asked staff to look into merging the computer-proficiency requirement with senior exhibitions, which they initially considered canceling. The exhibitions include projects, community service work, evidence of success throughout a student's school career and work samples.

Senior exhibitions are not required by the state to graduate and are not called for in University of California eligibility guidelines, officials said.
