Gov. Jerry Brown named a lawyer and former UC San Diego official undersecretary of the California Government Operations Agency on Wednesday.
Tony Perez, 49, held multiple positions at UCSD from 2008 to 2012, including assistant vice chancellor for health sciences affairs and chief health sciences counsel. He left for a position at the Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina, before returning to San Diego and starting his private legal practice.
The Republican previously worked for UC Davis, the University of San Francisco and was an attorney at several law firms.
His appointment to the agency that handles purchasing, information technology, and human resources does not require Senate confirmation. His pay will be nearly $154,000 annually.
