Summer Lecture Series at Birch

The Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series features presentations on research conducted worldwide by those
connected to Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Subjects include:

June 13:
Sea Turtles of Indonesian New Guinea, by Geoffrey Gearheart, Scripps marine biology student, who discusses how scientists determine the dispersal patterns and mechanisms of
leatherback hatchlings of west Papua (Indonesia) and how this knowledge may help tailor more adequate conservation measures.

July 11:
Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas, by Forest Rohwer, San Diego State microbial ecologist, who discusses the role of microbes on changes in coral reefs. He has taken research expeditions to the remote Line Islands, and gained new insights into how people can influence reef health.

Aug. 8:
Subsidies, Aliens and Ecologists: Connectivity at the Edge, by
Drew Talley, University of San Diego biological oceanographer, who
discusses the ways in which on-shore and off-shore linkages are formed, and how connections across academic and public sectors can help us to better understand coastal habitats.

Lectures are intended for a lay audience. Birch Aquarium
admission and parking are included. Light refreshments will be served. Call to RSVP.
