UCSD Honors Veterans

The Student Veterans Organization at UC San Diego placed 388 small American flags out on the lawn near Geisel Library to honor each American service member who lost their life in combat this year.

is honoring veterans all week. The number of new and active student veterans at UCSD doubled in the last few years, according to the university. In 2008, a total of 68 veterans enrolled at UCSD. And in the fall of 2011, a total of 149 new student veterans enrolled. Currently, the campus has a total of 310 student veterans.

All this week the Student Veterans Organization has placed 388 American flags on the lawn her Geisel Library on campus to honor each American service member who lost their life in combat this year.

Nov. 10 —The SVO will table at Library Walk to encourage students to meet its members and provide information on the organization and its service projects, such as ­­­­­ mentoring military children whose parents are on deployment.

Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. ­­– A special ceremony will be held in Goldberg Auditorium at the Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center to honor a UC San Diego veteran staff member or student who has gone above and beyond his or her UC San Diego career duties to impact their surroundings or community. UC San Diego’s vice-chancellor for Research Sandra Brown will be the keynote speaker. Brown has been involved with veteran’s activities through her education and research.

Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. ­­­– For the official holiday, the SVO is participating in the 2011 San Diego Veterans Day Parade in downtown. Members of the SVO from UC San Diego will join veterans from San Diego State, University of San Diego, and several local community colleges to march together in honor of veterans and their service to our country.
