Sewage Pipe Maintenance Will Close Streets Next Year

San Diego will start pipe maintenance on La Jolla streets next March.

The La Jolla Shores Permit Review Committee met on Tuesday afternoon at the to discuss both new and old permit reviews. Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

  • The committee granted a site development permit to replace aging and deteriorating sewer mains. As a part of the plan, certain La Jolla streets will be under construction from March 2012 to January 2013. During that time, nearly 16,000 feet of sewer and water main pipes will be replaced. Paseo Del Ocaso and El Paseo Grande in La Jolla Shores will undergo the bulk of the construction. The project will be stalled from late May to early September 2012 because of the summer moratorium. Design, construction and inspection of the project will cost roughly $7 million and it will be up for bid starting in June. Information can be viewed on the city’s website, and residents can also call the public information line at 619-533-4207.
  • The committee asked a permit applicant on Calle de la Plata to continue planning and present updates at the next PRC meeting. at the La Jolla Community Planning Association meeting earlier this month because association members had concerns about its design complying with neighborhood policy. The owner wishes to demolish the house in order to build a two-story, LEED-certified home. Multiple residents spoke out to the committee, saying the newer model did not fit in with that area of the community. Neighbors also voiced concerns about tearing down what they believe to be a valuable building. The house has been in La Jolla for more than 50 years; however, the city’s Historical Resources Board did not deem it a historical site when it came up for review.
  • A neighborhood-use permit was granted to AT&T to place up to 10 post-mounted antennas in Gilman Court near the Interstate 5 ramp. The company will place faux-shrubbery atop the new 4G antennas in order to camouflage them.
  • Property owners who wish to rebuild a house on Paseo del Ocaso Road were asked to present updated plans at the next meeting. Committee members asked that the new plans observe city driveway codes and also wanted to ensure the new house assimilates with the rest of the neighborhood.

The next PRC meeting will be held at 4 p.m. May 24 at the recreation center.
